Chemical Aspects of the Inheritance of Flower Color in Impatiens Balsamina L.

چکیده
ECENT applications of chromatographic techniques ( BATE-SMITH 1948,1949) R have facilitated identification of anthocyanin pigments and related compounds in micro quantities, thus permitting extension of the combined genetic and biochemical work initiated by SCOTT-MONCRIEFF (1931) and extended by many others. The genetic studies by the late D. W. DAVIS and his associates (1958) on the inheritance of flower color in Zmpatiens balsamina provide a material which seems particularly well suited for such studies. The balsams have a short life cycle, large flowers, and rather precise differentiation of color classes. Various flower colors exhibited in this species have been ascribed previously to the presence of glycosides of three anthocyanidins: pelargonidin, peonidin and malvidin, (BEALE et al. 1941; HAYASHI et al. 1953; FORSYTH and SIMMONDS 1954) but no association of the pigment content with the genetic structure of the plant'was made in these studies. The species is one of a family of herbaceous plants which is known to produce leucoanthocyanins ( BATE-SMITH 1954) and flavonols (HAYASHI et al. 1953) ; hence an intensive genetical and biochemical study may reveal the metabolic interrelations of several classes of similar compounds. This paper deals with the correlation between genotype and complement of both anthocyanins and leucoanthocyanins. The data are still limited but allow some conclusions as to stages in the biosynthesis of the anthocyanins.

The Drought-Stress Response of a Drought Resistant Impatiens Processed in PEG-6000 Solution in a Simulation Test
Premise of the Study: Impatiens is a commonly seen garden flower, renowned for its strong adaptability and long history of cultivation. However, seldom has any research touched on its physiological resistance mechanism. In this experiment, the impatiens is selected from those which experienced aerospace mutation and thereafter 12 years of cultivation and breeding. Therefore, it is superior to t...
متن کاملInfluence of Genes Controlling Flower Color on Relative Quantities of Anthocyanins and Flavonols in Petals of Impatiens Balsamina.
N earlier studies concerned with the genetic regulation of pigmentation in the I garden balsam, Impatiens balsamina, the genes which determine the nature of anthocyanin pigmentation were found in individual cases to regulate also the structure of leucoanthocyanins (ALSTON and HAGEN 1958) and flavonols (CLEVENGER 1958). Thus the dominant gene H , while increasing the quantity of pelargonidin der...
متن کاملChemical Factors Affecting Anthocyanin Formation and Morphogenesis in Cultured Hypocotyl Segments of Impatiens balsamina.
Introduction The effects of various chemicals on anthocyanin synthesis and morphogenesis in the Impatiens hypocotyl were investigated to determine possible relationships between a specific biochemical process (anthocyanin synthesis) and morphogenetic events (the formation of roots and epidermal hairs). Cultured segments of balsam (Impatiens balsamina L.) provide excellent material for the study...
متن کاملPreliminary Characterization and Bioactivities of Some Impatiens L. Water-Soluble Polysaccharides.
Preliminary characterization and bioactivity of water-soluble polysaccharides from four Impatiens species-I. glandulifera Royle, I. parviflora DC., I. balsamina L., and I. noli-tangere L.-were investigated. The yields of polysaccharides range widely from 1.97% for I. parviflora roots to 18.63% for I. balsamina aerial parts. SEC (Size exclusion chromatography) chromatograms show that all samples...
متن کاملTargeted biolistics for improved transformation of Impatiens balsamina.
A transgenesis programme has been developed for Impatiens balsamina that will allow elucidation of the roles played by individual genes in the flower reversion phenomenon shown by this model species. The lack of explants exhibiting adventitious shooting in I. balsamina hinders Agrobacterium-based transformation, but the multiple shoots that arise from cotyledonary nodes present a suitable targe...
